What difference does Graphene make?

When will I need a Graphene:Ultra water purifier?
If you live or are travelling in the UK, unless you have a particular concern about the extra contaminants the graphene removes, you probably won't need one. However, there are parts of the world where the groundwater is heavily contaminated naturally - or from mining and industrial activity; places where the local legislation isn't yet able to monitor or control what is released into the groundwater system.
If you are travelling through - or working in - one of those places, then you could benefit from the additional protection graphene technology will offer. Check before you travel and take a Graphene:Ultra Filter Cartridge with you and swap it out when you need it.
How does it work?
Providing a whole new level of filtration, the new graphene-enhanced filter features our existing ultrafiltration membrane - with an average pore size of just 15 nanometres - and an additional Graphene composite element, to add three new chemical adsorption mechanisms:

How much water does a Graphene:Ultra Cartridge Filter?
It's important to note that, unlike the Ultrafiltration Membrane, these new filtration mechanisms don't prevent water flow when they've reached their limit; they simply stop removing contaminants. The UF element will continue to remove microbiological content until the FailSafe kicks in but, if you are having to source water in a particularly toxic environment, you'll need to keep track of how much water you've filtered, and replace the cartridge when necessary.

The amount of water the Graphene:Ultra cartridge will purify depends on the level of contaminant, so our figures show worst-case scenario. For example, our tests indicate that the filter is effective at removing PFAS/PFAO for up to 1000 litres; in reality, if the PFAS contamination is low, the filter will work for longer. However, unless you have access to accurate information about the level of contaminant present, the safest option is to work with the volumes we have provided.
Has the new Graphene technology been tested?
So far our new filters have been independently tested and proven to meet NSF/ANSI 42 – 2022 Version: Drinking Water Treatment Units, Aesthetic Effects, Section 4 – Material Safety, NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 – 2020 Version: Drinking Water System Components – Lead Content and NSF P231 – 2003 version: Microbiological Water Purifiers for Virus, Bacteria and Cyst. However we are still running tests to see exactly what and how much the filters will remove and for how long.
How does a Graphene Filter work?
Unlike the ultrafiltration membrane, that behaves like a sieve, the graphene element acts more like a carbon filter – like a sponge. Once a sieve’s holes are blocked, water stops passing through; once a sponge is saturated, water simply passes through. This means the graphene element can’t offer a FailSafe mechanism; once it’s removed everything it can, chemical contaminants will start to pass through the membrane to the drinking water. I had this purifier for about 3 years now and used it on about 10 UK wild camping trips. It failed on the third trip and then again a few weeks ago. The recent failure led to me get dehydrated on one of the hottest days of the year until I took to drinking dirty water. I was on a remote wild camp and needed to pull water from a large pond / small lake high in the hills.
I'm an engineer and there's a flaw in the design people should be aware of. On both trips I was using it to do what it's designed for..... to clean, filter and purify water from a source that was mildly discolored and contained some sediment. Wayfarer claimed the filter cartridge was blocked and it was user error. Thing is i'd only taken a few litres from a mildly contaminated source. The design claims to be more than capable but it's failed twice in conditions which should have only pushed it to 50 or 60% of it's claimed ability. The design problem is that the filter cartridge implodes and bursts resulting in dirty water passing straight through the filter. So not only did it fail when up against a modest challenge it failed in a way which was unsafe. If the water was not dirty this failure could happen and you wouldn't know till you got sick. The design needs a pressure safety valve to protect the filter and prevent dirty water passing through.
The first time it failed, and with lot of effort on my part, wayfarer reluctantly replaced the cartridge when it burst in service. This time I'm not going to bother sending it back and having a battle with them to get good service and a device that works as advertised. I don't trust the design.
I see lots of good reviews.... but that has not been my experience
Well it looks nice and is now full of water. I’ll have to wait until after the zombie apocalypse to let you know if it purified the water enough so we didn’t die. If we still have the Internet and no body has stolen all of my solar panels so I still have power, I’ll be sure to update this review.
